Adrian Cordina successfully defended his PhD research on Resistance to Third Party Litigation Funding in Europe at Erasmus School of Law on 26 November 2025. In his PhD research he explains the rise of third party litigation funding against the background of shortcomings of other types of funding for certain complex cases and collective actions. He analyses and compares regulatory frameworks in EU law, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands. Using valuable insights from law and economics and empirical findings he supports his argument that - in a nutshell - the resistance to third party funding is largely unwarranted and that TPLF, alongside other types of funding, is important to facilitate access to justice.

His project was part of the Vici project Affordable Access to Justice, a five year research project funded by the Dutch Research Council. He was supervised by Xandra Kramer and Louis Visscher. PhD defence committee members: Astrid Stadler, John Sorabji, Michael Faure, Ianika Tzankova, Stefaan Voet and Alexandre Biard. See also this LinkedIn post with some photos. The PhD research is open access available here.
